           CARITAS MAKENI

          - ABOUT US

Caritas Makeni is the Relief and Development Agency of the Catholic Diocese of Makeni, instituted in 1979 and currently headed by the Bishop of Makeni.

The operational area of Caritas Makeni covers the Nothern Province of Sierra Leone. Caritas Makeni is recognized by the government of Sierra Leone and registered with the Ministry of Development and Economic Planning and the Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (SLANGO).

Generally, Caritas Makeni supports emergency and development projects in agriculture, micro-credit and enterprise, primary health care, peace building and reconciliation, child protection, reconstruction and resettlement, community capacity building, and rural infrastructure development.

Caritas Makeni is recognized as one of the most important and leading agencies working in child protection in Sierra Leone. It was represented on all four commissions that were created by the Lome’ Peace Accord. This Organization has been working with separated children, child combatants and war-affected children since the outbreak of the civil war in March 1991 working through the extensive network of church based community programmes that provide care and protection for children in extremely difficult circumstances. During the emergency, Caritas Makeni under its Child Protection Programme was running a number of projects such as: Psychosocial Care, Family Tracing and Reunification (FTR), Training and Employment programme (TEP), Interim care, Demobilization and Alternative care project.

As the country was moving from one with an emergency profile towards participating in development, Child protection agencies like Caritas Makeni realize that simply reuniting the separated child with their families is not the end; it’s the beginning of what we now have as Community Based Reintegration (CBR) project. Other current projects include: “The Girls Left Behind” for formerly abducted girls (girl mothers), Child Rights Training Programme and Community Education Investment Programme (CEIP).
